Beadwork, literally, is anything made with beads. What first comes to mind is jewelry, and perhaps second is decorations on apparel. Wedding dresses are famous for having beadwork on them. While jewelry is probably one of the first places we see beading used, it is not where the story ends.

First of all, don't assume that beading needs to be a round bead. Anything with a hole in it, could be strung. Likely the first man to do this was using a rock or shell with a hole inside. Perhaps the bone of a dead animal, to let other people know of his prowess in the hunt. It wouldn't take long for that to become a contest; who has the most kills. Hence stringing many on a line at the same time.

With each culture, the definition may have been different, but the early process was the same. And this basic beadwork is prevalent in every culture throughout the world. Eventually, the means changed and the patterns became complex.

In today's society there is little that couldn't be made with beads, though, some things would ask the question, "Why do you?" Whole purses can be found created from beads, footwear as well (though I don't imagine that is comfortable). You could, if you so wanted, make a whole shirt from beads. This would be a long project and need the utmost persistence. Something smaller could be a cigarette case.

If you can dream it, it is possible to bead it.
