An African safari is not finished without taking a flight on a hot air balloon.

In 1976, Alan Root and his wife Joan- wildlife movie producers, utilized a hot air balloon to capture picture clips of wildlife. It was trouble-free, to use the balloon to access areas where a motor vehicle could hardly access, to film exceptional aerials of wild animals.

Thereafter, the approach attracted the attention of people who were willing to pay out top-dollar for this once in a lifetime experience. This gave rise to balloon safaris in Kenya Tanzania safaris.

Its early morning in the Masai Mara. The cover of darkness is still intense on the dawn and causes the reddish orange burn from the burner of the hot-air balloon glow vividly bright.

As the sun appears from behind the hills, the 100-foot high balloon is adrift over the Masai Mara savanah with each one of us lodged in a wicker basket attached to the large balloon.

Simply put, it's magic! The air currents carry us off track, overhead the brink of the Ngama hills and along towards the Talek River. Beneath, a pair of gray-back Jackals run haphazardly amongst the thickets and a hare scurries to its underground retreat.

Afloat, we have a clear eagle's eye view of the immensity of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti sanctuaries stretching to the extent where the eye can see. It looks eternal.

We take 90 degrees spin and beneath we spot the tops of the heads of giraffes over the canopy of acacia bushes as they browse the foliage, hardly observing us moving in the air above.

After 60 minutes afloat, the flight comes to an end and a bouncy landing brings us back to the ground. At this point we inch out of the carrier to a champagne breakfast. The charm is that this breakfast happens in the bush, where ever you land, and it's cooked as you watch with the burners that minutes before kept you floating in the air. What a way to begin our morning safari!

"Over the years, there has been progression in hot air balloon advancement. The burners are more effective and quieter than the initial balloon safaris" offers the captain.

"One of the things that surprises most first-time balloonists is the utter quiet, the silence as you float about the plains, the forest and the streams of the Masai Mara. The noises underneath drift clearly upwards: a lion's roar, elephants crashing through the shrubs, baboons perched on the tips of the trees and shrubs. If you're lucky you will climb high overhead for the sight of a life-time. " the captain offers.

After the end year rains, the grass is dense green as we drive back to our lodge observing game en-route. It is such a contrast as these are the similar grasslands which, in November, were golden, parched and hash.

Suddenly we stumble upon a mother cheetah marking her territory, spraying it with urine. Once executed, she scans our troupe and then releases a soft chirping sound as she proceeds on her way through the grass. Possibly she is searching for her cubs.

The grasslands are teeming with elephants, buffaloes, topi, wildebeests and other antelopes and the sight is just terrific.
